Daughters of Destiny is a documentary about a school called Shanti Bhavan located in Baliganapalli, Tamil Nadu, India. The school seeks to educate children who have been born into the lowest “untouchable” class of the abolished, yet entirely prominent caste system that still exists in India. This piece tells the story of a student, Thenmozhi, and her mother, a matchbox maker. They both possess valuable potential, but only one is given the opportunity of an education. Their story highlights the social hierarchies which destroy lives based on nothing but circumstance. Communities in poverty dream of education as a right, and it is important to understand the privilege learning comes with, while we fight to transform it into commonplace over time.
