Fantasy and storytelling rely on the suspension of disbelief. Oftentimes, as the genre has grown and developed, certain aspects of the fantastical have lost their unique and captivating qualities, regardless of their otherworldliness. In Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Lewis Caroll’s Alice in Wonderland and the 2002 animated film Treasure Planet, falling is used as a device to create enchanting scenes of high tension. These moments displace and confuse the audience in the same way the characters are, and that feeling of involvement becomes the most captivating aspect of the entire experience.
